How to Create Your Brand Mood Board │ Metro Detroit │ Moon Reflections Photography

Greetings friends!

Our last blog post was all about why it’s important to have a Brand Mood Board, if you missed it, click HERE! So now that you know WHY you need one, today we are taking you step by step on HOW to make one! That’s right, we got your back. We’ll be covering what materials you’ll need, methods you should use, and even a FREE template for you to practice on!

Alright, let’s get to it…

To recap, remember that we are doing this to keep you on track as the owner of your brand and to help guide you to intentionally convey your style and desired aesthetic to those who you will be working with.

So how do you wanna do this?

There are a couple of directions you could go when creating a branding mood board. Are you a super hands on person? Need a physical representation of your brand image? Create a mood board using:

  • foam board or card board (you can find this at any craft store or even the dollar store)

  • glue (we prefer spray glue!)

  • images that inspire you! These can be printed off from Pinterest, ripped out of magazines, etc.

There is a sense of peace and calm when you are physically creating with your hands. When you are done with your beautiful board, hang it up in your office / work space so that you can see it every day as a reminder of the brand image you want to be putting out!

Feeling like you rather simplify the process and are a little tech savvy? A digital mood board allows for more room to create. You can use platforms such as Pinterest, Canva, IMO, Photoshop, Unsplash, etc. Here’s how to get a digital board started…

  • download images that inspire you and that are in alignment with your brand

  • find a template to upload your inspo images to, click HERE to download our FREE template in Canva to help you practice OR find a template you like on etsy.com for a fee.

  • have an idea of what you want your style to convey so that you go into this with a clear sense of direction

Remember, this is a process! It’s something that deserves your time and effort, so don’t get discouraged or stressed. If you do begin to feel overwhelmed, walk away, take a break, and come back later! NO SHAME! This is for your brand so you need to have a good mindset when doing this so that you feel excited and happy with the results!

Okay, let’s talk about what you need to INCLUDE on your mood board to convey the right vibe!

  • textures; for example, is your brand whimsical and airy? Find fabrics flowing in the wind that portray that emotion.

  • tools and materials that you may use in your creative process; for example, if you are a painter, include images of paint brushes or paint strokes.

  • packages; do you sell products? Ship to your customers? Include imagery of how you plan on packaging those products. Will you use certain paper, colored boxes, etc.

  • color scheme; hellooooo this is a big one! What are your brand colors!? This needs to be established ASAP! Pick 4-5 colors that compliment each other AND your brand.

  • locations/places/spaces; where do you like to create? For example, we light to shoot in light and airy spaces, so we wouldn’t want to include an image of an urban/grunge location.

  • fonts/letters/words; what font is on your logo? Your website? Is it minimalist? Fancy? Bold? What words do you want to come to people’s minds when they see your work? Fresh, minimalist, lavish, dramatic? Use some good descriptive words here!

The goal is to convey some emotion through your board. What do you want people to feel when they see it? What they feel will be a reflection of your brand!
